JDL collaborated with Massachusetts General Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedics, Related Beal, and Fusion Design to build out the Foot and Ankle Store at 52 Second Avenue in Waltham, MA. The Foot & Ankle Store in Waltham is an orthopaedic retail store affiliated with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, a world-renowned academic medical center, and one of Harvard Medical School’s oldest teaching affiliates. JDL transformed the Foot and Ankle shell space into a welcoming and functional retail environment that allows patients direct and convenient access to their orthopaedic supply needs.
With a focus on ensuring the space was highly accessible, significant coordination and consideration was given to patients utilizing wheelchairs and with walking aids. A sweeping common corridor – highlighted by decorative wayfinding, ceiling features, and flooring transitions – was created to allow for adequate flow through a busy travel pathway. JDL coordinated custom product display niches with intricate lighting and finishes to display products that accommodate a wide-ranging and evolving product line.
A standout feature is a custom shoe and brace machine designed to fulfill on-site orders based on each patient’s specific needs. JDL also installed digital signage and glass film around the device to attract customers and elevate their shopping experience.
Working within an active patient environment, JDL was tasked with the challenge of creating a modern, customized retail environment while maintaining the functionality needed for a healthcare-oriented store. Through thoughtful construction and attention to detail, JDL achieved a seamless integration of artistry and practicality.
